What’s this?
Sloppy joe sauce. Enough said?
Servings
4-6 sandwiches, depending on how sloppy you get.
Time
Ten minutes prep + 15 minutes cooking. If you’ve got a multicooker, it’s a good make-ahead dish - start on saute/high to brown the meat and get a simmer, then just keep warm for an hour or whatever.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 onion, minced1
- 3 oz (1/2 a can) tomato paste
- 1 cup ketchup
- 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 2 Tbsp brown sugar
- 8 dashes (1/2 tsp?) of People of the Trees hot sauce, or similar2
- Dash of cayenne
- Dash of black pepper
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- Buns of your choice3
Make
- Brown the ground beef in a medium-sized pot.
- Add the onion and cook until the onions are just starting to get soft
- Drain any excess fat
- Add everything else (except the buns, ha ha - tomato paste, ketchup, worcestershire sauce, water, mustard, garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, brown sugar, hot sauce, cayenne, black pepper, salt)
- Simmer 10-15 minutes, adjusting seasonings to taste at the start, halfway through, and near the end4
Enjoy
Once it’s simmered to your preferred level of sauciness, dig in! Goes well with coleslaw, crunchy veggie sticks, applesauce, and/or tater tots

I usually use white, yellow would work too, so would red in a pinch ↩︎

Ingredients: Apple Cider Vinegar, Onion, Water, Carrot, Pumpkin Seeds, Garlic, Arbol Chile, Sesame Seeds, Chipotle Meco, Chile, Turbinado Sugar, Sea Salt, Cumin, Allspice, Clove. This is a savory and earthy hot sauce with a vinegar base, so use whatever works for you. ↩︎

You could also serve this atop mashed potatoes, rice, baked potatoes, whatever ↩︎

Usually I need to add a little of one or more of the following: salt, hot sauce (needs spice/acid/tang), worcestershire (needs savory), ketchup (needs tomato/sweet), tomato paste (needs tomato/savory), mustard (needs tang). Adjust to your taste. Sometimes I like to throw some paprika in there. ↩︎
